The Tories in Hammersmith & Fulham are still claiming Labour's successes while neglecting public services

Hammersmith and FulhamBy Toby Flux

In September we highlighted that Channel 4 News may have been hoodwinked by Hammersmith and Fulham’s ruling Conservatives. Today we can reveal that it looks like another journalist has also recently been taken in by false claims from the service-cutting Conservative council.

In an article entitled Council tax freeze in London may be hint of a Conservative future The Times’ Whitehall Editor, Jill Sherman, reported the following claims made by Stephen Greenhalgh, Hammersmith and Fulham Council leader:

“He said that the council, judged one of the top performers in the country by the Audit Commission, had improved services. Streets were cleaner, a £2 million library had opened, £4 million had been spent on extra police and £8 million on improving park services.”

Jill Sherman, however, might be surprised to learn that the new library was arranged by the last Labour Administration, despite it being what tripped Cathy Newman up on Channel Four News. She may also like to know that two of the three improved parks mentioned were also arranged by the last Labour administration.

It’s interesting that the Tories are repeatedly taking false credit by purposely blurring the line between their actions and the action taken by Labour previously. It’s a hoodwink journalists seem to be easily taken in by, as it creates the mirage that the Conservatives are in the centre political ground and care about public services, while in reality they’re on the extreme fringe and rapidly reducing the quantity and quality of local public services.

Stephen Greenhalgh is not only leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council, he is also in charge of the Conservative Councils Innovation Unit, and was awarded ConservativeHome’s 2007/08 ‘Local Hero Award’. His ’slash and charge’ policies really are indicative of what the modern Conservative Party is planning if they win power nationally.

In just the same way G. Brown enjoyed the fruits of economic growth laid by the conservative government in the mid-90s.
And thus he claimed to have abolished boom and bust.
Until bust reappeared.

All well and good, but there has to be some debate about the value for money that residents are receiving from council tax. Mine is £1,800 and my salary £22,000 (before tax). This year my Labour council made an increase of 4.5%, for which they indicated I should be grateful. My salary increase last year was 0% and next year will be again 0%. I qualify for no help. The £1,800 in no way reflects value for money. The Labour council has splashed about cash on fancy projects and initiatives, many of which have died a death, but our roads and pavements are a disgrace, local schools are substandard, and local infrastructure seems to have gone backwards. The council itself is heavy with middle managers who have been recruited over the past ten years.

I cannot grasp how what I receive from the council can be worth one and a half month's salary, and I know many people who are wondering and worrying if they can continue to pay. An explanation of worth is required.

The same applies to decent homes money for social housing in Hammersmith and Fulham. Residents are being told that their new kitchens and bathrooms are thanks to the Tory Council, whilst in fact this money came from a Labour government. Judging by their "regeneration" plans for White City and West Kensington, investing in social housing is the last thing H & F Tories plan to do...
