Tories' Euro allies support "deeply homophobic" law

By Alex Smith / @alexsmith1982

Liberal Conspiracy has the story that one of David Cameron's allies in the Tories' new European group personally voated for a Lithuanian law that has been described as a harsher, more wide-reaching version of Britain’s Section 28.

LibCon says:

"The draconian Law on the Protection of Minors from the Detrimental Effects of Public Information bans discussion of homosexuality not only in schools but in any public places and media that could be accessed by young people.

Amnesty pointed out that if adopted, the proposals would also permit the prosecution of an extremely wide variety of activities, including campaigning on human rights issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity, providing sexual health information to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) people or the organization of gay film festivals, or Pride events."

Tomaševski voted for the law on June 16th - just a week before he joined forces with the Tories.

I thought Section 28 had been quashed by the government.

If it hasn't then isn't our government just as bad?

And do all our 'allies' have to agree with everything we think or be condemned as racist/homophobic/sexist/fascist/capitalist/socialist and so on? If so Gordon wouldn't have any truck with Burma, Zimbabwe, South Africa and so on.

Didn't think so.

If this site isn't a Labour mouthpiece (as the Party alleges) how do you explain the close alignment, day by day with the musings of Platform speakers. Clearly many of the articles here are closely co-ordinated with the 'themes' pumped out by the Grid (whatever its called these days).

So if you are not just a Party organ, how do you explain it? Clairvoyance?

And who is the real organ grinder?
chris jones @ 43 weeks and 1 day ago
There is nothing in this to trouble any sensible person. It is what I believe would be described as an expedient, like purchasing oil from a country attempting to manufacture nuclear weapons or Christmas decorations made in a country attempting to expunge Tibetan culture. Isn't the world a complicated and nasty place? I blame all on people.

I think you should be more concernd with this,

If you asked the majority of people what they honestly think about homosexuals the answers would not be good. When you have disgusting vile people like Tatchell demanding the age of consent is dropped to 14 it only proves that the Homosexual lobby has gone to far. So by advertising this you are actually giving people more reasons to vote Tory.
Most Mums and Dads are incensed at our Politically correct adoption services and despair when children are placed in these so called families, but are too frightened to say as the ywill be labelled homophobic.
Can't put a black child with white parents but will give them to two homosexuals, disgusting.
And before all you idiots out there line up to accuse me of homophobia, i'm not, in fact I agree with a lot of the changes made over the last few years, but I draw the line when you start playing with Childrens minds and lives.
Its about time selfish adults allowed children to be children again, the sexualisation of our minors is one of Labours biggest failures. We have the highest rates of sexual disease, single mothers, juvenile crime all under a Labour Gov't.

Phillip Wells @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
Well, to be factual, the rate of single parenthood doubled under the Tories and has since flattened off, but let's not let that get in the way of rhetoric.

Age-of-consent wise, I personally disapprove of lowering it, but anyone with sense has to concede that current limits are entirely a consenquence of very specific social and historical norms, which are very recent in origin - though in my view, correct.

As for adoption, it's entirely an empirical question: current evidence suggests lesbian parenting is not harmful to children, but there's little evidence on gays, so I'd suggest caution. On the other hand, if 'most mums and dads' are outraged, they should bloomin well start adopting themselves, instead of whining that other people are doing it! Personally, I'm not a big fan of gay adoption, or of most fertility treatments, simply because I don't think life is about getting everything you want - but public policy has to be based on evidence of what works for kids. Indeed, if we followed that evidence to its logical conclusion, we'd remove all kids from single parents (because 'on average', they fare worse) and place them with 2 parents of whatever gender. Certainly 2 lesbian parents are empirically better for kids than one female one! So it's a bit of an ethical pickle.

And if most people's honest thoughts about gays are 'not good', that's their problem, frankly - it should have absolutely no bearing on what policies Labour advocates, because things which are right are right regardless of public opinion.

I'd rather live in Lithuania than the UK.

At least it still looks like Lithuania to their citizens, and their government don't place the "rights" of foreigners over their own nationals.
Mark Smith @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
Lol

Dale's in a hissy fit. Again
Old Holborn @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
@StewartCowan - I wonder why you presume one radical voice speaks for all gay people? That would be rather like me brazenly assuming Hitler to be a general voice of the 'right', would it not? And on section 28, I would agree that homosexuality doesn't need to be mentioned til secondary school, but from then on it certainly should be, for the sake of many thousands of young people's mental health. You can't underestimate the power of making these young people aware that they're not alone in feeling same-sex attraction; after all, if they only watched the telly they'd think that to be gay you have to be a bitchy, camp, sexless eunuch like Alan Carr, Norton, O'Grady, Gok Wan and all the other 'media-friendly', 'non-threatening' gays. It's also completely perverse that the section of the population most vulnerable to sexual health problems receives absolutely no instruction on this in school (or didn't when I was there).

I hear Alastair Campbell is about to make a come back. Can we expect more of this?

As has already been said, "Homosexuality should NOT be promoted to children."

Road Hog @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
OH,

Talking of Mr Tatchell, he wrote this in 1989:

"To echo the sentiments of the early gay liberationists: our ultimate goal must be a sexual revolution to enable everyone to share the joy of same-sex desire and love. That is the truly emancipatory vision of the GLF era. May we never forget it." (The emphasis is Tatchell's.)

The Movement's leaders don't want equality, but a wholesale change in society's values. This means devaluing marriage, which is the underpinning of any free and successful society.

Why they should want 'everyone' to be engaging in same-sex activity is beyond me, unless it is simply due to their lust for power, or perhaps if everyone is doing it, they think their guilt and shame might be lessened.
Stewart Cowan @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
Oh for crying out loud is this how desparate it has become? Gordon's favourite airline owning businessman has a criminal conviction for tax evasion. Does that mean Labour support that as well? Grow up!

"Just goes to show that merely sharing an antipathy to Europe should not be enough to maintain an alliance"

Why?

Defence of UK legal primacy, independence and culture comes above any worry about what social policy Poland, Lithuania or anyone else has.

If you had your way no-one in the UK opposed to EU federalism would have any representatives with any power. Sounds about right for the anti-democratic stateist monster that the EU is.
Guy M @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
Because that isn't the purpose of alliances within the EU. If the aim of the Tories was to "defend UK legal primacy, independence and culture" then they would all join UKIP in calling for withdrawal, as you seem to advocate, but surely that isn't Tory policy?

Alliances in the European parliament have very little to do with Europe itself, and if the Tories join with fringe groups rather than the mainstream centre-right, then they must expect these sort of stories
Mike Homfray @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
Alliances are surely for the purpose the partners in any alliance want them to be?

If all the partners in the new group are joined by an opposition to further EU integration then that is as valid a reason as any other.

With regard to withdrawal, are you saying there is no position between signing up for every bit of EU integration and leaving? So support for the single market but not the social chapter for instance isn't valid?

Why is it that you pro EU lefties think the best bet is to frighten everyone with scare stories of sign up to everything else we will have to leave?

I believe it is a fact that UK socialists knowing they had no chance getting certain concepts agreed by the UK electorate have got them and and still try to get them via the EU anti-democratic backdoor.
Guy M @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
Just goes to show that merely sharing an antipathy to Europe should not be enough to maintain an alliance.

Interesting how the usual homophobic religionists come crawling out of the woodwork, isn't it? Whether they like it or not, their beliefs are now not reflected in law, and I think will not be again.
Mike Homfray @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
The new EU grouping is about shared views on Europe and a federal EU especially.

I realy don't care what they do or don't do in their own country so long as the anti federalist grouping grows ever stronger.

I don't think you get that basic point. The group members might have different economic, taxation, social, foriegn, defence, law and order policies but they agree on the anti federalist tendencies in the old right wing grouping of Merkel et al.

I know yuo'd like me and others to care, but I don't. If this group helps put the block on EU integration then they can do what they want in their own country.
Guy M @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
Draconian, Alex?

It's what we had just a few years ago and we need it back badly.

Homosexuality should NOT be promoted to children.

Some people believe that encouraging youngsters to identify with a 'sexuality' at a young age, when they are not mature, actually encourages suicidal thoughts.

What do we have in Britain? Stonewall going into schools to bang on about 'homophobic bullying'.

All bullying should be tackled - BY THE SCHOOLS. In my opinion, Stonewall are using bullying as an excuse to normalise unnatural sexual practices to attract youngsters, because they know that when they have matured and their hormones settle down, most will be beyond recruitment.

Children are used as pawns in all sorts of political games. Good on the Lithuanians for dealing with this one, because loose morals kill civilisations.

Stewart Cowan @ 43 weeks and 2 days ago
Stewart

Let children be children. Alas, every religion, every political party and every "vested interest" group can't.

It's not so much an article as trying to alert people to what's going on on other blogs - I always said LabourList should be a portal for what's happening elsewhere as well as other things.

Hi Alex/Labourlist

And if every country was like the uk we would all be safe .

Alex

I admire your loyalty , I like what you have done to this site , But , This is scrapping the barral , If the "new Labour " party want to goven like this, It is a path many voters wont follow .

The Labour party needs some fresh blood, Some direction , A Labour leader , Can we stop being torys ?

The torys dont eat babies and we dont ruin the econmey , So stop this childish mud slinging and debate facts , Lots of voters hate the spin .

Is this the way forward?
