The Accused

Murdoch CoulsonBy John Prescott / @johnprescott

I'm still pretty stunned by the Guardian's revelations that the News of the World under Andy Coulson hacked into my phone. I'm even more amazed to discover that I was just one of 3,000 targeted by this paper and Murdoch's News International.

I see Coulson is trying to distance himself from the report by saying he wasn't at the paper when the payout was made to Gordon Taylor. That's not the point. You were there when the crime was committed. And as Andrew Neil said tonight of Coulson's News of the World on Newsnight:

"This was a newsroom out of control. We know from your story, it has become a default position to go to these guys and get information this way.

"Everyone who knows the News of the World, everybody knows this was going on. But it did no good to talk about it. One News of the World journalist said to me tonight, it was dangerous to talk about it.

"If this behaviour was systemic in the newsroom, why would you not know about it, why would you of all people, not know about it. Either you're incompetent or complicit."

This really does call Cameron's judgement into question in hiring Coulson. McBride rightly got the sack after those childish emails. In fact, Cameron claimed the incident showed there needed to be a 'change of culture' in Downing Street.

But the systematic illegal hacking of upto 3,000 people is in a different league all together. Allowing the man who allowed that to happen into No10 would be deplorable.

So the question Cameron must answer is 'do you back him or sack him?' By the fact his people are briefing that he's "very relaxed" about the episode, we sadly have our answer.

No-one "hacked" into your phone. They merely punched (geddit?) your default voicemail access code which everyone knows is 0000. Only morons neglect to change it.

Why does this lying useless hypocrite think we are interested in anything he has to say, hes a joke in his own Party and hated by everyone else.
Heres a 10 year plan for you John, find a deserted island and move there, it will take 10 years to lose all of that fat accrued living it large at Taxpayers expense, and hopefully in 10 years you'll be dead and we the British Public will never have to see or hear from you again, you stupid stupid irrelevant man!
Phillip Wells @ 50 weeks ago
Did JP really write this guff?
Or did his chum Al mangle these few words into an incomprehensible morass of pretend shock?
I think Gordon should get the sack for employing Damien MacBride while he tried to destroy the reputation not only of MPs but also one of their wives. That's a question Gordon has to answer.
William Silver @ 59 weeks and 5 days ago
Perhaps Prescott would care to tell us on what grounds Coulson can be sacked without being able to claim for unfair dismissal.
Justin Pearce @ 59 weeks and 5 days ago
love it, typical newlabour, first class hypocrites. bring back real labour.
micro shite @ 59 weeks and 6 days ago
The police confirmed this evening that nobody tried to hack your phone, why on earth would anyone want to?
Your too full of yourself.
roger alexander @ 60 weeks ago
Saw you on TV this morning John - always a fascinating experience. I noted you mentioned that McBride had been sacked when working for the Labour Party because of his behaviour. I thought he was employed by the the Government and paid for by us the tax-payer. Thanks for clearing that up.
George Woodhouse @ 60 weeks ago
He is still employed by Labour. I know it, you know it and they know it.
Old Holborn @ 60 weeks ago
now we proles can begin to understand the importance of legislation that allows for special security provisions to protect information relating to politicians, media people etc - after all they are not as we !
david cheeseman @ 60 weeks ago
Whilst I agree the tapping of your mobile phone is an outrageous breach of your privacy John, it happens to over 50 million people in this country every day. The actions against you are viewed as illegal, but by stark contrast the actions against the 50 million is perfectly legal. Equality and fairness John, equality and fairness.

Now onto a more pressing issue about social justice, equality and fairness. The property at your disposal, but fail to use, provided by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, have you moved into this property now John? Have you responded to the notice relating to this property, or do you continue to ignore it, thus blocking the proposal to redevelop the site into affordable housing? His Honour Judge Knowles gave you a little extra time to respond to the notice, I'm just wondering if you have explained why you should not be evicted from a flat that you do not reside in, have never resided in and have little or no reasonable interest in. Or is there another reason for blocking affordable housing on that land?

Care to express an opinion John? Or would it be reasonable to assume that some questions about social justice can sometimes be very difficult to answer? In case you were not aware, the RMT have offered some alternative accommodation for you John if you're struggling to find somewhere to live.
Bill Dewison @ 60 weeks ago
I'm amazed that anyone thought Prescott's phone was worth hacking into.
William Silver @ 60 weeks ago
I think maybe Mr Prescott's phone wasn't hacked in the true sense of the word but he never changed the PIN number on his voicemail. Does that come under stupidity or incompetance for someone as high up in government as Mr P?
G BN @ 60 weeks ago
Judging by JP's past perfomance I'd say both.
Mike C @ 60 weeks ago
Couldn't agree more!
G BN @ 60 weeks ago
"McBride rightly got the sack after GUIDO FAWKES found out about those childish emails and took it to the media, who we tried to shut up, obviously."

Fixed that for you John.
Old Holborn @ 60 weeks ago
"So the question Cameron must answer is 'do you back him or sack him?'"

There's always the third option - Cameron could sack him from his position whilst continuing to give him £133k a year, a grace-and-favour country estate and a flat in Admiralty House.

No, wait, that was you wasn't it?
MonkeyBot 5000 @ 60 weeks ago
"McBride rightly got the sack after those childish emails."

Nice try, John but inventing smears about the mental instability of a man's wife ain't childish. It's a lot of things but "childish" isn't one of them.
Phil Mill @ 60 weeks ago
John any thoughts of the David Mellor story, you know the one, his mistresses flat was bugged illegally by the NOW exposing him, bet you loved that though.
Joe Fraud @ 60 weeks ago
"Either you're incompetent or complicit"

You could say that about Brown and McBride, which is it?

Joe Fraud @ 60 weeks ago
Silly to get so excited before there's anything solid to go on. The likelihood is that political detumescence will ensue.
Laurence Hodge @ 60 weeks ago
Ah the usual right-wing nut jobs totally missing the point on this story.

Theo Blackwell @ 60 weeks ago
"The usual right-wing nut jobs totally missing the point on this story"

Well please, Theo, furnish us with an exposition.
Phil Mill @ 60 weeks ago
Here's the point

Fat Man who spies on all of us doesn't like being spied on himself. Or put more traditionally "all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others"

Next!
Old Holborn @ 60 weeks ago
Yep. The same fat man that admonished us all for driving our cars to work, but was rather indignant when it was pointed out that Pauline took a chauffeur driven limo to travel 500 yards (poor dear didn't want to mess up her hair).

Whilst I feel sorry for those 'celebrities' having their phones tapped, it seems quite poetic that it should happen to Prescott.
Mike C @ 60 weeks ago
damn it you earlier commenters have said it all !!!!
david cheeseman @ 60 weeks ago
This is old news...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2006/aug/11/pressandpublishing.mirror

You supported the government having access to this info on the public - why shouldn't the public have access to your info John?

A member of the public prosecuted under RIPA for mis-filling in a school application form (trying to avoid the worst of the education system that labour have created) while MPs getaway with full scale corruption because the House of Common authorities refuse to report them as fraudsters.

Oh - I get it, the only significant thing here is that you can have a pop at one of camerons bods... You aren't using Browns moral compass are you?
tory 'killed for telling the uncomfortable truth' troll @ 60 weeks ago
Now look here tory etc. troll.
I bought Gordon Brown's moral compass on eBay for £5.50 and I don't expect to see it referred to in such a cheap way.
William Silver @ 60 weeks ago
Hang on for a second, this would have nothing to do with the humiliation rightly dealt out to you by the NOTW for an extra-martial affair would it? After all your famous jibes at Tories that couldn't keep their trousers on your hypocrisy was all the more risible.

As for Coulson, let's see the facts emerge before rushing to judgement. With McBride he was caught out with prima-facie evidence linking him to his disgraceful behaviour. Coulson, so far, appears to be not at all connected to this act and also has faced a criminal investigation before, again, with no action taken. So there appears to be no evidence at all, as yet, linking him to this.

You have absolutely no evidence at all that links Coulson to this, the Police didn't last time either when he was Editor. I am sure also that whilst grubby politicians cling to power in the light of very damaging revelations, Cameron has demonstrated he has more integrity in this little finger than you have in your voluminous frame - he would sack him in a heartbeat.

So I would refrain from the shrill language now; it makes you look desperate.
a b @ 60 weeks ago
What's the problem?

So people are listening to your phone calls and reading your Emails. Get used to it, your Government does it to all of us "ordinary folk" every single day.

Remember, nothing to hide, nothing to fear.
Old Holborn @ 60 weeks ago
All the more laughable when the Labour's self-proclaimed internet warrior can't even set his own voicemail PIN number from the default.

What I find incredibly galling is this rotten government can legislate to read our e-mails and listen to our phonecalls; yet when it's done freelance and in the public interest; they get all high and mighty.

A pox on your house.

Yes, absolutely "Nothing to hide, nothing to fear."

Well, when you are porking your secretary you deserve to get caught. Maybe the sense of indignation he feels now gives him some sense of the indignation and anger we feel from a big brother authoritarian government when all we are doing is going about our lives legally.
a b @ 60 weeks ago
"But the systematic illegal hacking of up to 3,000 people is in a different league all together. Allowing the man who allowed that to happen into No10 would be deplorable." - Pies Prescott (ex DDR)

I agree. Gordon should resign immediately. He allows the hacking of 60 million peoples phones every day.

Old Holborn @ 60 weeks ago
Oh that's nothing.

This pillock has his chubby fingers all over such wonderful things as ID Cards, CCTV, DNA database (with innocent kids on it).

So after his damocene conversion to technology; perhaps we can expect one as a champion of civil liberties and a right to privacy.

I'll even bake him a cake if he does.
a b @ 60 weeks ago
You have a valid point. I'd love to be able to argue with it, but I can't.
Bill Dewison @ 60 weeks ago
