Where does Peter Lilley really stand on seal clubbing?

Letters ToryBy Alex Smith / @alexsmith1982

UPDATE: Peter Lilley's office says the Twitter account is not operated by him. I've asked again that he clarify his position on seal slubbing and the EU bill to ban seal products.

There's a cutting and powerful blogpost over on Letters from a Tory, which takes the form of a letter to Stockwell Day, Canada's socially conservative international trade minister who is leading the fight against the EU ban on the import of seal products.

In a damning condemnation of his party's views on animal hunting, the letter - written by a Conservative voter who describes himself as "a centre-right social conservative with hints of economic liberalism and fiscal conservativism as well" - says:

"Canada is already threatening to go to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to challenge the ban...luckily for you, the vast majority of Conservatives will support you because making a sport out of murdering animals is something that many of them hold dear."

I initially thought the letter was laced with irony, but in the manifesto for Letters from a Tory, the letter's anonymous author clearly states that "hunting with dogs should remain outlawed."

And in a post earlier this year, he wrote "the RSPCA exists because we as a society don’t think it’s good form to be needlessly cruel to animals.  While the RSPCA may have its faults, their opposition to murdering animals is something that I find genuinely appealing."

This is a Conservative who believes strongly in animal welfare, and quite rightly, too.

So it's interesting to note his clear concern over his party's views on hunting in this country, of which he writes to Day:

"If you really want some help tackling the EU ban, come and have a chat with David Cameron and all his pro-foxhunting buddies who will no doubt share your concern that the disgusting, brutal and inhumane sport of clubbing baby seals to death for fun while making a few quid on the side is under threat and will jump to the rescue...if other Conservatives stay true to their cherished principle of being allowed to murder animals just for laughs then you have their undivided support."

One of those Conservative MPs picked up on the letter very quickly. Peter Lilley, the right wing Tory MP who voted against the ban on fox hunting in 2002, Tweeted (obviously more of a fan of the micro-blogging site than David Cameron) the original post's headline yesterday "Conservatives should support clubbing baby seals." Nothing more, nothing less.

As Letters from a Tory says, we are surely a society that disagrees with cruelty to animals, and as the video below shows, seal clubbing is particularly brutal.

I shall be writing to Peter Lilley, asking him to clarify asking him to clarify his position on whether he does indeed subscribe to his own Tweet that "Conservatives should support clubbing baby seals".

Does he, like his Canadian colleague, support the contiuation of this brutal activity? Or does he support the EU bill?

I truly despair at people who think clubbing seals, fox hunting or anything similar is acceptable in this day and age. But Labour cannot try and gain in moral high ground here. Part of the reason for me voting for them in 1997 was the banning of fox hunting. But I live in South Warwickshire (heart of fox hunting territory) and believe it hasn't stopped. The Chief Constable's asssociation has said that they will not get involved in policing fox hunting or prosecutions anymore.

So whilst we have a law banning it, it is ineffectual. If the Tories do look like repealing it, then I'll have to look elsewhere to place my vote.

Please stop the, Tories are nasty and one-eyed baby eaters, it won't make me or others vote Labour. What your article should have been about was, that you supported the forthcoming EU directive and that you were going to sort out the fox hunting ban properly. Policies not bashing please.

I love these socialist totems.

Seal clubbing? so what?

Fox hunting? so what?

The UK is bankrupt and you think these things matter?

*COD*FISHING*, that is something that mattered - that mattered big time, but cod aren't fluffy or cute so canadian cod is extinct. Seals, Foxes - kill all you like there will be plenty left, it really doesn't matter... stop behaving like 5 year olds in a soft toy shop and get real... there are things that *REALLY* matter, don't divert attention from them. Every fox or seal you spend time saving is time stolen from real issues, that really matter.

Anything has got to be better than David Cameron hitting puppies over the head with a lump hammer though.

Do you think if I repeat that enough it might get in one of the nationals?

It's possible the Peter Lilley thing is out of context - he's got a rather ill advised sense of humour.

I regard myself as a Cameroon; liberal paternalism for society and free markets for the economy. But the position of Fox Hunting with dogs is not something I can bring myself to support.

Would we reintroduce badger baiting or cock fighting in the name of small government and liberty? No. Controlling the fox population is fine but hunting with dogs can't be more efficient than shooting them - it's certinaly crueller and involves people taking pleasure while an animal suffers.

I've listened to fellow Conservatives try to justify this as a libertarian cause; but that's balls. Conservatism believes in the rule of law to protect the weak and vulnerable. Animals are vulnerable, even more so as they have no voice or vote.

I'm not a zealot on animal welfare; I eat meat and I've even been involved with animal testing studies. But you don't inflict suffering for the fun of it.

My only worry is the next step is to try to ban angling. I can't square my previous argument with a support for fishing yet instinctivley it feels wrong to ban angling.

Hi Alex - are you being leaned on to make LabourList more NuLabour? What's with all the recent anti-Tory knocking stories? I thought this was a place for the Labour-minded to discuss Labour issues?
David H @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
It's quite simple David. The Labour minded sometimes like to remember why they are not Tory minded. Peter Lilley really helps to that end.

You are right peter - the most important thing to a socialist is to be different to the conservatives. Socialists care nothing for relevance, consistency or logic - 'NOT TORY' is their primary driver.

Much easier way than a series of articles, just put a picture on the home page of Ken Clark with a glass of whiskey in one hand, a cigar in the other and that daft grin he has. He's enough to put me off voting for the Conservatives. They could offer £20k per vote and I still wouldn't vote on the basis that Ken and those of a similar mind are still proving that nothing has changed other than the logo and the front man.

You mean you sometimes forget?! ;-)
David H @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
I don't think "anti-Tory knocking" is NuLabour? We have a day of policy ideas tomorrow. I'm doing some work on that right now, as well as collaborating the results of the poll on what Labour people think on electoral reform and finishing transcribing the Claude Moraes interview. I agree there's been too much on the opposition today and yesterday. Sorry.
Alex Smith @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
Thanks Alex. I like LabourList and some of the common-sense items discussed here are helping me retain at least some prospect of voting Labour, but the anti-Tory stories are just a huge turn-off as far as I'm concerned. Hope you enjoy your day tomorrow!!
David H @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
By the way I noticed that you didn't specifically answer as to whether you were being leaned on to make LabourList more NuLabour. I'd be surprised if you weren't being.
David H @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
I'm not!
Alex Smith @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
I hope you enjoy it!

And what about the barbaric practices inflicted on tens of thousands of animals in THE UNITED KINGDOM??

Daniel . @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
So I struggle to see what your point is?

Peter Lilley has an ironic sense of humour?

Sorry, I'm lost here.
a b @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
You have got to be joking right. What's next, "Toriez eat Babies"?

You've taken an issue wildly out of context, misrepresented massive and drenched it in lies.
James - Man of the Right @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
I don't think that's true and I don't think you think that's true. Read the post again. Try harder.
