New Generation of optimists

Back in September, Ed stated that a ‘New Generation had taken charge of Labour; optimistic about our country, optimistic about our world, optimistic about the power of politics’, and nowhere is this more evident than in the North West.

Since the general election, Young Labour membership in the North West has risen by over a thousand. This newfound hope and enthusiasm is so inspiring. Young people all over the country have come home to the party that has always been there for them. Now, they’re ready to take the fight to the coalition.

But when we say young people, what do we mean. Well, the government are systematically destroying the futures of people starting from the very beginning. The cuts to Sure Start are affecting both children’s futures and those of the young parents that use them. The cancellation of BSF hinders the chances of equal learning opportunities for everyone; some will be lucky to have a school near them that has had the refurbishments/rebuilds but then there is a majority out there that won’t.

Then we move on to the next step of the educational ladder. The scrappage of EMA means students that have to travel long distances to college, or can’t afford lunch without the extra help simply won’t be able to afford college education. Then, of course, tuition fees. The idea that the next generation of university students is going to have to pay a near mortgage just to receive education that is becoming increasingly compulsory in today’s society is sickening.

But indeed, the fight back has started.

Young Labour activity across the North West has sky-rocketed. Young Labour groups are forming all over the place; Tameside and Stockport Young Labour, Sefton Young Labour, Bury and Rochdale Young Labour, Trafford Young Labour and of course, the ever growing Manchester Young Labour.

The fresh batch of ideas from young people is going to be the driving force of Labour policy going into the next general election. The very thought of it gives me goose bumps in excitement. This is the message we need to send out to young people across the country, that indeed, we, are the party of the future; the party of optimism.

Never has campaigning for our local candidates been so optimistic, enjoyable and engaging. No, we are not in government any more, but the hope we see in the people’s faces up and down the country when they see the Labour Party is still fighting for them gives you a feeling that is indescribable. So read this, get out there, get to the doorsteps:

“When you believe in something, you should stand up and fight for it”
