A shower of Titians - Tories caught fiddling with Wiki

By Derek DraperWiki

You may have seen Paul Waugh's astonishing piece about the Tories changing Wiki following PMQs to make David Cameron look right.

Well, that's just the start of it. They've been at it before. You can see all of the changes made to Wikipedia from the Conservative Party IP address here.

Yesterday they added the following terms to the list of collective nouns:

A fistful of fingerpuppets
A troop of staples

While on February 6, one CCHQ staff changed the entry for Jennie Elias - who's she, you ask? Well, apparently, not as important as she thinks, according to CCHQ:

Jennie Elias is a notable political figure in the United Kingdom.

They changed this to:

Jennie Elias is a political volunteer in the United Kingdom.

They also changed:

David Cameron was born watching porn in London

To:

David Cameron was born in London

They also changed this entry on Peter Bone's page:

His first action was to try to accept praise for Paul Stinchcombe's work at PMQ's. PM Tony Blair slapped him down like the child that he is with his reply. He is one of the busiest MPs in the House, and is regularly one of the 10 most active, in terms of Questions asked and other contributions. Exactly how this makes him busy is anyone's guess. Most of the questions that he asks are a waste of parliament's time. He also works as a Sven Goran Eriksson lookalike.

To:

He is noted for a similarity in looks to Sven Goran Eriksson.

Unluckily for CCHQ changing people's perceptions of the Tories as a bunch of lightweight charlatans is a little harder.

Autobiography and POV are clear breaches of Wikipedia policy, but we all know it happens. What’s clear is that the Tories in doing it from their own IP are utterly incompetent.

Put simply they broke the 11th Commandment: “Thou shalt not get found out.”
Keir Stitt @ 80 weeks and 6 days ago
If the main stream media wasn't so biased stories like this would be on the 6 o'clock news. Don't hold your breath, folks. The BBC and Jon Snow will probably report (again! yawn) stuff like the fires in Australia or the plane crash. Do these stories held Labour get elected? Of course not. Don't tell me the press isn't biased.

Next time someone tells me they're thinking of voting for Cameroon, I'll say that a Tory changed his Wikipedia entry from "David Cameron was born watching porn in London" to "David Cameron was born in London." How pathetic. If we all do this, Labour will win in a landslide. And then we'll see some change at last!

Yea I was a bit puzzled as to the problem with correcting blatent vandalism of Cameron's wikipedia entry, I think that was a poor example - I guess Derek wanted to ask whether it can ever be right for any political party to edit wikipedia material. Personally I don't see editing something like that as a problem.

The rest of the examples are a bit odd, wrong but unsurprising. I agree with Keir Stitt that the most bizarre bit was that the individuals responsible didn't mask their own IP address, I cannot help but wonder if there are far more serious abuses of wikipedia by individuals who actually have an understanding of proxies.

Someone said to me that it was entirely believeable that wikipedia is the primary source of information for the Tories, because "just like the rest of their policies, wikis can easily be edited and expunged when they're shown to be wrong."

Facts have no place in modern conservatism, only lies and punchlines.

I actually think that those people who leave comments on this site slagging off Labour policy are the Tories in disguise trying to get their points across. I don't particularly mind, because it's keeping them busy, but if it was the case, it is a bit sad.
Dan McCurry @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago
Funny really, there seems to be Tories on here, but for some reason they're 'Blue Blog' is practically empty.

I think Labour are making some very strong gains on the internet.
Tim Davies @ 81 weeks ago
And another thing - not being Labour does not make one a Tory. In many cases - such as my own - it makes me "ex-Labour".

Got it?
Barry Hunt @ 81 weeks ago
Do you really? How odd. Your evidence, please?
Barry Hunt @ 81 weeks ago
Any room for internal debate within the Labour Party?
Thomas Hardman @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago
Enjoyed the wiki and Guido posts - amusing and makes them look ridiculous. I posted complaining about you following me on Twitter via Dale- this is much more like it. Keep it up!!

I feel that changing these entries is fair enough.
Would you like to be recorded as having been "born watching porn"? How is it wrong to change a mostly pointless rant about how ineffective a MP is (which is an opinion, not the facts which Wiki goes for). The Labour Party are just as much to blame for all the PR gimcrackery anyway. I mean, this entire website is a PR stunt.

At the end of the day, I'm not sure that many people actually care about party political entries on Wiki. I mean many people don't care full stop. So why are people wasting time on this? It's pathetic sniping. It's like two schoolgirls being vile to one another and serves no purpose.

The Labour Party is supposed to be innovative, why don't they grow up first?

Nina Hartley's parents are movers and shakers in the American Zen scene but she's one of the biggest pornstars going. Heck, I've got TWO of her vids. Very instructive and amusing they are as well.
Charles Hardwidge @ 81 weeks ago
It's a pretty standard part of reputation management these days to tackle the wiki, always amusing to see companies struggling to combat negative press. Are we reading this piece believing other UK parties never have edited their own entries, or each others? Its all public domain. http://katrina.cs.caltech.edu/erenrich_rnd345/scanner_final/

I hear Cameron was blowing off about some regulator resigning today and this covert tweaking isn't a surprise either. The Tories seem to be scraping the bottom of the stupid and immoral barrel with their obvious bullying and manipulative strategies so your closing comment isn't necessary.

Competitive behaviour promises a big short-term payoff but always narrows scope and drives things down to the bottom. The more desperate for power, status, and wealth the more competitive people become but this is a trap. I wouldn't bother.

The Tao is subtle, kind, and patient. This is why it's better to say nothing than say something stupid. I'd look more towards something useful and understanding than merely attacking the Tories. Harm only leads to more harm. This is what they want but not what they need.
Charles Hardwidge @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago
Should we had some new collective nouns; How about a con of conservatives or a twaddle of tories.
Simon Wellavize @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago
Just another unimportant childish spat which makes both parties look foolish in the eyes of the voting public, IMO.
David H @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago
dead right.
Richard Hopkin @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago
People can change stuff at Wiki??!! I'm shocked. Or something. Yes, that's it, nonplussed!
Charlie Farley @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago
Stop presses, staff with too much time at CCHQ spend time mucking around on the internet.
Thomas Hardman @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago
Obviously changing the Titian entry on Wikipedia is pathetic, but I see nothing wrong with the other changes made that you've listed.
Tim Davies @ 81 weeks and 1 day ago

Gee, Mr Draper - Hold the front page!

You sure are first with the news aren't you, matey?

Now tell me when did Blair cease being PM??

(June 27th 2007 in case you haven';t caught up yet)

How about ideas and policy rather than these puerile non-stories of yours?
