Feminism is not a dirty word - LabourList poll results

By Rowenna Davis

The so-called Labour bloke-o-sphere that I have been criticising for the last few days has just proved me wrong by voting for feminism. Over half of the respondents to our poll said that Labour was not doing enough to support women, over 50% were in favour of keeping all-female short lists and more respondents thought that Blair's Babes had enhanced gender equality than detracted from it. The most shocking result however was that (assuming they didn't think "F-word" meant something else) - almost 60% said that Labour should be using the word "feminsm" in political debates. Rock on Lister Sisters...

Check out the results below...

50-50

Blair's Babes

F-word

Nice one Winston!

He's too young to drink though, but I think his Mum's just called him in for his tea...

What you want the breakdown from all 19 voters?

Tom's been a bit pushed for time trying to Rapidly Rebutt all these negative comments, as a result it appears he's not had time to actually read half of the posts he's replying to properly. Judging by that last one I think the strain may well have driven him to drink.

Your comment makes no sense.

I thought you were a laydee yerself?

No.

And if wimmin only shortlists happen, you needn't bother either because you are the wrong gender.

Make bed. Lie in it.

"May God protect us from wimmin-only shortlists."

Thinking of running for a Labour Parliamentary selection then? :op

Those results are what I expected, except the last one, though that one is probably the way it is because of the increased number of women active on the site in the past few days.

May God protect us from wimmin-only shortlists.

What I want (as a woman and as a rational human being) is the BEST person for a role, and that's NOT necessarily a woman!!!

If women can't be *rsed to make the effort to climb the greasy pole, they don't deserve to reach the top.

I want the most able to reach the top, not the most assisted.

And as for Blair's Babes, that bunch of power-dressing, who's-got-the-brightest-jacket bunch of over-preened groupies, the less said the better...

He's got a point Rowena. Have you ever left a comment to someone's article? Either before you were a the site or since? I'm gonna draw a graph of these answers and post it.

A Labour Party internal poll produces the 'right' results. And you are surprised?

Did ERS supervise it?

Was there any trace of custard in the boxes?

Yeah right, let us know when the ONS have cleared them.

It’s interesting that the results of the poll don’t reflect the majority of the comment being left. Now this may have something to do with the fact that the most frequent commentators on this site are pseudonymous Tories (possible just one old guy with multiple accounts and too much time on his hands), or is it that people are more willing to take an anonymous poll than contribute to debate?
I commented elsewhere that I think the interesting thing about your term as guest editor is, although you tried to even up the overall contribution by having exclusively female contributors, the commenter’s were (apparently) 99% male, suggesting the traffic to the LL site is primarily male, and having female contributors does not seem to have changed that. But does this poll now suggest that that may not be the case? If the latter is true why do these people not want to join in the debate? And does their lack of contribution not add to this “bloke-o-sphere”, and in fact prove us blokes innocent of not letting women in?
Of course it could just be a refection of a low take up of the poll, hopeful that’s not the case; some numbers would be good.
